Forge
A VS Code extension that turns the editor into a place to learn: guided missions reviewed by AI.
Status: paused. The extension is published, but I have not kept it up and its backend is not running. It is here for the design and the code, not as a product to install.
- Role
- Design, development and publication
- Stack
- TypeScript · VS Code Extension API · Node.js · Express · PostgreSQL · Supabase · Groq
The problem
People who start programming learn on web platforms that look nothing like the place they will work. When they finally open a real editor, they have to learn the tool from zero.
The solution
Forge brings the course into the editor. You install the extension, open a mission and solve it with the same tools you will use at work. On submitting, a model reviews the solution and gives specific feedback, and your progress follows your GitHub account.
What it does
- Missions in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Git inside VS Code
- AI review of each solution with specific feedback
- Progress synced to the user's GitHub account
- Backend in Node.js and Express with PostgreSQL on Supabase
- Published to the VS Code Marketplace
Decisions
The editor as the platform
Instead of building another web editor, I used the VS Code Extension API: the learner meets the real tool, and I do not maintain an IDE.
AI as a reviewer, not a solution
The model evaluates and explains, but never hands over the answer, so the learning stays with the learner.
Where it stands
The extension is published, but I have not kept up its maintenance and its backend is not running, so I do not link the Marketplace page from here. I list it because the design and the code are mine and are worth reading; I would rather say it is paused than show a product that does not work.
